Stallions & Breeding

Rearing Skewbald

Colts / Stallions are required by the Association to be LICENSED at the age of 3 years and over. They are required by the association to undergo veterinary inspections - they will be DNA typed and micro chipped also.

The minimum age for licensing colts is 2 years at the owners request. It is mandatory at 3 years.

Applications to license a stallion should be made through the C.E.O. who will direct you to an I.P.S.A. approved Veterinary surgeon in your area to undertake the required examination.

Veterinary Standards Relating To The Approval Of Stallions:

The Veterinary surgeon must carry out a clinical examination to include the following:

Bloodtyping:

Bloodtyping involves checking for the presence of a wide range of protein factors on the surface of the red blood cells. The resultant pattern is unique to each horse and can be used to identify that horse from any future samples. The blood factors are padded on to a foal by its parents. As part of the lottery of conception - it is a random selection. However quite a bit can be learned about a horse's parents from bloodtyping. If a factor is present which was not present in either parent, then one or both of them cannot have been a parent. If all of the factors are present in one or both parents, then it can be said that there is no reason to doubt the parentage. It cannot however be said that foal (A) must be the offspring of mare (B) and stallion (C).

Samples of blood taken for licensing I.P.S.A. stallions are kept on file at Weatherby's Laboratories in Ireland.

Microchipping:

Now mandatory for all registered stock. This is in line with all other associations, has many advantages and is a most cost effective method for verifying a horse's identity.

Covering Certificates:

This association provides covering certificates for licensed stallions standing at stud. They can be obtained by contacting the C.E.O.

Breeding

The association’s stance on breeding, responsible ownership and competitiveness have resulted in a significant number of quality animals being shown and as an association we do feel we have contributed to the significant reduction of the negative "Tinker" or "Gypsy" horse image. This applies equally to the traditional full-feathered cobs and heavy horses or lighter vanners and riding and driving ponies - not just to the thoroughbred and half bred types.

This association strongly believes that all types must be valued for their unique worth, be bred accordingly and care taken to ensure the retention of a full range of these types in the showring.

This association administers a register of licensed stallions and these are issued with documentation comparative to pass books issued by other societies and within the guidance of EC directives.

Mares

Piebald On Trek

In order to combat any spread of klebsiella, Pseudomonas, contagious Equine metritis, EVA and similar infectious diseases, stallion owners have been recommended not to allow their horses to cover mares which may be unclean.

This association STRONGLY RECOMMENDS that all stallion and mare owners comply with the common code of practice for control of C.E.M. and E.V.A.

Barren and Maiden Mares:

One aerobic cervical swab / clitoral swab must be taken before going to stud.

Mares With Foal At Foot:

No swabs as a rule, but a mare with foal at foot is not necessarily clean and should be swabbed as appropriate.

Recommendations For Mares Sent To Stud:

This association is NOT RESPONSIBLE OR LIABLE for any mare visiting an I.P.S.A. licensed stallion. Mare owners must ensure that the individual facilities they require are available.

Showing And Competition

Skewbald Practicing Jumps

Details of showing classes and any competition or events organised will be announced on the home page notice board of this web site or by contacting the committee. This association has formed its own Judges panel to try to ensure that Piebalds and Skewbalds are judged to the same criteria, but individual shows are at liberty to appoint their preferred qualified judge whose decision must be final. Guidelines criteria are available on request to non I.P.S.A. judges.

Judges for the panel are accepted from experienced and qualified persons or those who have the recognised specific qualities and knowledge that enable them to properly assess a coloured horse on conformation and soundness. Application for acceptance onto our probationary or local shows listing are accepted at any time by written application - acceptance is at the discretion of the I.P.S.A. committee.

It is this association's view that the best horses continue to be those that display GOOD CONFIRMATION, SOUNDNESS, TYPE CHARACTERISTICS and GOOD COLOUR & MARKINGS. Also, those who are PRESENTED WELL conforming to SHOW REQUIREMENTS & ETIQUETTE regarding MANNERS, DISPLAY and RIDE as applicable.

It is an association rule that safety standard approved HARD HATS be worn in RIDDEN CLASSES. It is also strongly recommended that a BACK PROTECTOR be worn for any JUMPING or CROSS-COUNTRY events.

Since it is the aim of this association to improve the status and perception of Piebald & Skewbald horses it is imperative that great care and attention is paid to the turnout of both horse and handler / rider at shows. Horses and ponies should be plaited where appropriate, hoofs should be oiled, the coat in good condition and bathed if dirty or stained.

In-Hand Classes:

Ridden Classes:

In these classes competitors will be asked for a ridden display which should include walk, trot and canter with a change of leg and a halt and stand still. In some cases the judges may ride the horse.

In ridden classes there is a strong emphasis on RIDE, MANNERS and TRAINING.

Judging Criteria And Emphasis:

In the showing judges are asked to accept paler colours as of equal worth and value as the darker ones and ideally the colour should have depth and clarity within its own spectrum with clearly defined and regular markings. Conformation, soundness and type always take precedence over colour and markings unless a class is defined as for "Best Colour Markings" only.
